When the pressure rises, instinct alone is not enough. At the 2022 Canada Games in Niagara, the Quebec U18 team turned to data to bring clarity to the moments that decide tournaments.

As a partner of the Quebec U18 team, Sports AI used the Canada Games as a real world testing ground for Playlab. The goal was to support performance in real time while gathering feedback to continue improving the platform.

The experience became a strong example of how integrated data can enhance decision making, communication, and results at the highest levels of competition.

Playlab in Action

Throughout the tournament, Playlab worked in real time, capturing live data directly from the match environment. Across five games, 19 players were tracked, unlocking more than 100 performance metrics per match and giving coaches immediate access to both team and individual data when it mattered most.

During matches, coaches relied on advanced performance indicators such as pass orientation, position-based passing options, reactions following ball loss, and other high-impact metrics to analyze game flow and player behavior in real time.

This continuous stream of data enabled staff to anticipate situations rather than react to them, reinforcing tactical principles as the match evolved.

Data as a Second Set of Eyes

One of the most important lessons from the tournament was how data complemented coaching intuition. According to Alexandre Salvoni, Head Coach of the Quebec U18 team, he can identify the problem in nearly 95% of situations. However, real-time statistics for both the team and individual players helped validate and measure what he was seeing, adding confidence to critical decisions such as early tactical adjustments or substitutions.

Assistant coach Paolo Saravia echoed this sentiment, noting that in-game statistics act as a 'second look,' helping to avoid bias and ensuring decisions remain objective.

As Salvoni explained, data brings neutrality, making it easier to communicate decisions clearly and align players with coaching intent, especially during key moments like halftime talks.

When Analysis Becomes Understanding

The impact of data didn't stop at the final whistle. After each match, players were given tablets displaying their individual statistics, creating immediate opportunities for reflection.

Many players naturally approached coaches for additional feedback, using the data as a foundation for deeper conversations around performance, decision-making, and improvement.

This post-match process strengthened communication between staff and players, turning statistics into teaching tools rather than just numbers on a screen. As Salvoni noted, Playlab allowed him to deepen his interactions with athletes and reinforce learning moments throughout the tournament.

From Insight to Gold

By combining real-time analysis with meaningful post-match feedback, the Men's Quebec U18 team was able to make faster adjustments, reinforce key behaviors, and stay aligned throughout the competition. That consistency translated directly to performance on the pitch.

As the tournament reached its decisive moments, the team was fully prepared mentally, tactically, and collectively. That preparation translated into a gold medal at the Canada Games, built on execution, trust, and clarity powered by data.

Closing Note

While the platform has continued to evolve since 2022, the core lesson remains the same: when data is accessible, contextual, and trusted, it becomes a competitive advantage where it matters most.
